It shares visual characteristics with earthenware from the Silla period in Korea which was approximately the 5th to 8th century, but this is a 20th century studio pottery piece made in a Silla inspired style. The impressed mark looks like a modern workshop or artist’s seal which may read 栛 (commonly interpreted as a variant of xie / hyup, meaning “to cooperate” or “harmonize”). During the 20th century Mingei (folk craft) movement, master potters closely studied and emulated the rustic, unglazed textures of ancient Silla stonewares such as this vintage and highly collectable piece. This piece measures 7 inches tall, 5.5 inches top diameter, 4.75 inches base, and approximately 7.5 inches at bulbous mid-section. See less
