A captivating pair of color lithographs after costume designs by Leon Bakst (Russian-French, 1866–1924), created in 1921 for Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Sleeping Beauty.” The coordinated compositions portray Harlequin figures in Bakst’s unmistakable theatrical style, with dramatic silhouettes, masked faces and rhythmic diamond-patterned costumes.
One design depicts a standing Harlequin in green and blue, with the inscription “Harlequin / 5 acte” visible within the image. Its companion portrays a female Harlequin, traditionally associated with Columbine, in a voluminous blue-and-gray checked costume. Both bear Bakst signatures within the compositions, and the female figure is dated 1921.
The lithographs are presented as a matched pair in silver-tone frames with handsome double matting, including textured silk outer mats and coordinating green and blue inner borders. Gallery labels from La Galerie Rouge Art & Frame Gallery of New Hartford, New York, remain attached to the reverse.
Acquired from an estate where the pair was cataloged as “Leon Bakst Color Lithographs of 1921 Harlequin Costume Designs for the 1922 Production of Tchaikovsky’s Ballet ‘The Sleeping Beauty.’” A copy of the original purchasing attribution is available as supporting documentation.
An especially appealing pairing for collectors of Ballets Russes material, theatrical design, Art Deco imagery and early 20th-century European works on paper. Sold together as a pair.
Each framed work measures approximately 13 inches high, 11.75 inches wide and 0.75 inch deep.

One frame has visible water staining to its exterior paper backing; the artwork has not been removed from the frame to examine the concealed margins.
