A striking, collector-grade pair of original 1807 hand-inked copperplate engravings by the celebrated English antiquary, artist, and Keeper of Prints for the British Museum, John Thomas Smith (1766–1833).
Published on December 26, 1807, for his definitive topographical study, "Antiquities of the City of Westminster," these plates serve as invaluable, crisp historical records of London's early development.
Included in this matching set:
Plate 1: "Plan of a Portion of Westminster" (Surveyed 1734–1748) – Formed from an original drawing by the Commissioners of Westminster Bridge, this plan maps out the intricate layout of the streets, lanes, and alleys prior to the construction of Great George Street. Prominently identifies King Street, Charles Street, Duke Street, and Gardners Lane.
Plate 2: "Plan of Part of the City of Westminster" (Surveyed 1578) – Taken from Radulphus Aggas's famous Elizabethan map. This highly visual plate captures the Thames waterfront, mapping out the 16th-century structures of New Palace Yard, the old Clock Tower, Parliament House, and the Privy Bridge stairs.Designer

Framing: High-end wood moldings with a rich burled wood / faux-tortoise finish. The inner lip features an intricate, hand-inlaid checkerboard/marquetry border that draws the eye directly to the crisp antique plate lines.
