Early 20th Century French Provincial Butcher's Block with Brass Details
An early 20th-century French Provincial butcher's block in hand-painted wood, circa 1930, fitted with cast brass mounts.
The solid chopping surface sits at a working height of 35 inches. Above the block, the shaped splashback features a cast brass bull's head crest positioned over a horizontal utensil rail. Heavy brass plates secure the front corners. Below, the shaped frieze holds a single drawer with a brass ring pull, measuring 17.25 inches in depth. Fluted corner blocks flank the drawer, and the base rests on four turned, fluted legs with bulbous upper details.
Condition and Details:
The piece retains an older hand-painted finish over wood. Wear, surface staining, and scratches consistent with age and utilitarian use are present throughout. The brass mounts display an aged patina. An old repair is present to the back of the upper crest behind the brass bull's head; this repair is not visible from the front.
