Comest from Chulucanas, a town in northern Peru famous for its rich folk pottery traditions. Chulucanas pottery traditionally utilizes intricate resist-dyeing, etching, and a smoking process (often using mango leaves) to achieve deep, earthy dark or black tones contrasted against lighter cream or terracotta backgrounds.
Signed vintage pieces by Sandoval from the 1990s—ranging from decorative vases to figural sculptures—are sought-after examples of traditional South American folk art.
