Signed in the plate. A finely executed satirical lithograph from the celebrated French series Macédoine, published in Paris by Aubert & Cie and printed/distributed by Chez Bauger. It is a classic example of French July Monarchy-era social satire. The comedic irony relies entirely on the short title caption printed at the very bottom: "Amour pour amour." (Translation: "Love for love" / "An eye for an eye in love") The caricature plays on a dark, satirical distortion of romantic devotion. Instead of showing an affectionate embrace or a gentle exchange of feelings, Plattel presents an absolute physical brawl. The title "Amour pour amour" satirizes the idea of equal reciprocity in a relationship: instead of returning love with love, these two characters return blow for blow, scratch for scratch, and grip for grip.
