The painting depicts an elderly man with a voluminous, wavy white beard and features etched by the passage of time, captured in a three-quarter close-up against a dark, neutral background. The artist demonstrates a brilliant command of *chiaroscuro*, employing a dramatic, focused light source from above to highlight the contours of the man’s furrowed brow, wrinkled skin, and flushed cheeks. Every detail—from the individual hairs of his coarse beard to the luminous highlights on his skin—is rendered with remarkable texture and tactile immediacy. Works of this type served as fundamental exercises in emotional expression, physiognomy, and lighting effects for artists of the era. The rich paint application, the palette of earthy tones, and the profound human dignity reflected in the subject's gaze capture the enduring influence of Baroque traditions fused with the intimate naturalism of the 18th-century Central European school. Oil on canvas, 58 x 43 cm. Good condition. See less
