The chairs feature an expressive fan-shaped rattan shell resting on a slender black metal base. The radiating rattan structure, elaborate looped border and beautifully executed bindings give the chairs their distinctive sculptural appearance. The combination of traditional rattan craftsmanship with a light metal structure is characteristic of abraham and rol's experimental approach to furniture design during this period. Janine abraham and dutch-born dirk jan rol began collaborating in france during the 1950s and developed several rattan designs for rougier. Their work helped introduce a distinctly modern architectural language to a material more traditionally associated with conservatory furniture. Their celebrated soleil armchair, created in 1956, was awarded a gold medal at the 1958 brussels world's fair. This pair remains in good original vintage condition, with visible patina and age-related wear to both the rattan and metal frames, contributing to their authentic character.
