This vintage nautical art tray is a rectangular serving piece in pale, honey-toned wood, with mitered edges, low straight sides, and two flat, rectangular handle tabs projecting from the short ends. The interior is set with a bold, graphic painting of two seafarers at the helm, a bearded, haloed figure in a flowing maroon-and-yellow mantle standing behind a young sailor in a white cap and blue coat as they grip a large orange ship's wheel. The figures are outlined in confident black line, and the color is laid in flat, saturated fields of cobalt, navy, plum, marigold, and tangerine, with cream reserves defining the curling waves and swirling foam. The flowing washes and crisp contour lines are reminiscent of silk-painting or batik technique, which gives the scene a stained-glass intensity and a lively, poster-like energy. A signature is visible in the lower right corner of the artwork. The painted panel appears to sit beneath a clear protective layer, which lends the surface a smooth, slightly glossy finish. The wood frame shows a natural grain with subtle variations in tone and a warm, gently aged patina that contrasts beautifully with the deep blues of the composition.
Use this piece as a working serving tray for cocktails and coffee, or prop it on a shelf, easel, or console as wall-worthy art. It complements Mid-Century Modern, Coastal, Eclectic, Maximalist, and Boho interiors, and looks especially striking in a bar area, den, or lake house. The tray measures 16¾ inches wide, 10½ inches deep, and 1¾ inches high. Wipe the wood with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth, avoid soaking or harsh cleaners, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the pigments. Use a liner or coaster for wet or hot items. The tray is in very good vintage condition, with vibrant original paint, light surface scuffs, minor edge wear, and a gentle patina. Add it to your collection today.
