This cheerful still life depicts an abundant bouquet of white daisies with golden-yellow centers, loosely arranged in a rounded blue ceramic vessel. The flowers spread naturally outward in different directions, with individual blossoms shown at varying angles and stages of bloom. Lush green foliage fills the arrangement and provides a wonderful contrast against the crisp white petals.
Downs sets the bouquet against a softly painted powder-blue background, allowing the white flowers to stand prominently within the composition. The blue vessel and background create a cool, coastal palette, while the reddish-brown tabletop adds warmth and anchors the arrangement.
The painting has an appealing American Impressionist/folk-influenced still-life quality, with visible brushwork, softly modeled petals and an informal garden-fresh character. Particularly attractive are the numerous individual blossoms, which give the arrangement considerable movement rather than the rigid symmetry of a traditional floral still life.
Painted in oil on stretched canvas and signed “FD” at the lower right. The painting is presented unframed, with the image continuing to the edges, giving it a clean and casual appearance suitable for displaying as-is or framing.
A particularly decorative Francis Downs floral that would work beautifully in a Palm Beach, coastal, cottage, traditional or collected interior. See less
