This exceptional example of late 19th-century Chinese weaving is defined by its serene palette. The field is dominated by a luminous ivory ground, characteristic of sophisticated Peking production, offering a tranquil backdrop that elevates the subtle design elements. This piece is a prime illustration of refined ivory color rugs.

The composition features a delicate scattering of auspicious symbols and scholar's objects, arranged around a subtly defined central medallion rendered in deep indigo and soft beige. Unlike the dense patterning of earlier periods, the design employs negative space beautifully, allowing the eye to appreciate the fine line work and the sparse, elegant floral rugs motifs that frame the center.

Woven entirely from high-quality wool, the knotting technique yields a plush, resilient pile, typical of the finest workshop output from this era. Given its substantial dimensions, this piece is classified among desirable room size rugs, offering expansive coverage suitable for major reception areas or formal dining spaces, providing both warmth and historical gravitas.

The border system utilizes classic Chinese fretwork and scrolling vine patterns in muted browns and pale blues, neatly containing the expansive field. As a genuine piece from the 1880s, this rug represents a significant investment in textile history and remains highly sought after by collectors of exceptional antique rugs. See less
