Charming antique oak child’s youth table chair, dating to approximately the turn of the 20th century.
Youth table chairs were designed for children who had outgrown a traditional high chair but still needed additional height to sit comfortably at the family dining table. This example retains the distinctive narrow proportions and elevated seat associated with the form.
The chair features a woven cane seat, tall spindle back, turned legs and stretchers, decorative side braces, and rounded finials. The warm oak has developed an attractive aged surface and natural patina that gives the piece wonderful character.
The combination of the slender spindle back, turned construction and woven cane makes this a particularly charming example of late Victorian/early 20th-century children’s furniture.
Please note that this is a child/youth chair rather than a standard adult dining chair. Its unusually high seat was intentional, allowing a child to sit at approximately dining-table height.
Exact maker and date are unknown. Based on its proportions, materials and construction, the chair appears consistent with American youth table chairs produced around the late 19th to early 20th century, approximately 1890–1915.
A wonderful decorative piece for a collected interior, nursery, child’s room, period home, photography setting or antique furniture collection.
