This exceptional Peking rug captures the artistic vigor of the late Qing Dynasty. Woven from high-quality knotted wool, it represents a pinnacle of Chinese textile artistry. Pieces of this age and condition are highly sought after by collectors of antique rugs.

The striking visual contrast is achieved through the use of a rich, deep indigo border surrounding a luminous field. The primary ground color, a sophisticated pale yellow-gold, provides the perfect backdrop for the dramatic motifs. This use of a light field distinguishes it among ivory color rugs of the period, offering a brightness often absent in traditional palettes.

Dominating the expansive field is a dynamic arrangement of imperial dragons, rendered in exquisite detail and powerful, fluid lines, symbolizing celestial power and good fortune. While this design utilizes corner spandrels and a border typical of classical structure, the composition focuses on the mythological beasts filling the space, creating a powerful effect akin to central medallion rugs but with a more dispersed, celestial energy.

Measuring a generous size, this piece was clearly commissioned for a grand interior, likely an aristocratic residence in Beijing during the turn of the century. The scale and density of the knotting ensure both durability and a luxurious underfoot feel. Its classification as one of the finest room size rugs from the 19th century makes it an anchor piece for any discerning collection. See less
