A distinctive handmade studio pottery platter featuring an expressive stylized bull or bovine surrounded by an incised geometric border.
The animal and decorative elements have been worked directly into the clay, creating a richly textured relief surface. A softly variegated glaze combines warm caramel tones with creamy beige and subtle gray areas, settling differently across the carved decoration and emphasizing the handmade character of the piece.
The slightly irregular rectangular form and variations in the glaze are characteristic of individually made studio pottery. The reverse reveals the ceramic body and bears an impressed “B” maker’s mark at one corner. The artist has not been identified.
With its graphic animal motif and earthy palette, the piece works equally well displayed flat as a decorative tray or upright on an easel as a small work of ceramic art.
