LaBarge Chinese Chippendale–style Chinoiserie wall mirror, crafted in Italy during the 20th century. With its soaring pagoda crest, suspended bell-form ornaments and pierced frame, this impressive 63-inch-tall mirror is designed to function as much as a piece of architectural wall sculpture as a looking glass.
The richly ornamented frame features an intricate combination of pierced and carved rocaille, scrolling foliage, acanthus-like elements and architectural motifs surrounding a tall rectangular mirror plate. The openwork construction gives the substantial frame an airy quality, allowing the wall behind to become part of the overall design. Its most distinctive feature is the elaborate upper crest, where sweeping scrollwork rises toward a Chinese-inspired pagoda-form pediment supported by slender architectural elements. A series of delicate suspended bell-form drops hangs beneath the pagoda roof, providing the whimsical exotic detail characteristic of the Chinoiserie tradition. The warm gilt finish accentuates the depth of the carving and gives the mirror an especially rich appearance.
This mirror can be particularly effective in a modern room because its elaborate historic design provides a strong counterpoint to clean contemporary furnishings. Against a white, cream, charcoal or deeply saturated wall, the openwork gilt frame becomes almost sculptural. It has excellent scale for an entry foyer, where it can hang above a console table and create an immediate focal point. In a dining room, it would be striking over a buffet or sideboard, especially paired with contemporary lighting. It could also anchor a living room above a console or mantel or bring considerable character to a dressing room or large bedroom. Its gilding and silhouette also make it particularly well suited to Palm Beach, Hollywood Regency, or Transitional Style interiors.
This listing is for one mirror. We have two available. They are exactly alike. The last two photos are for reference only to show them as a pair.
