A beautiful example of Chinese folk pottery, this terracotta jar is a 19th-century pickling pot once used for fermenting rice or sorghum into vinegar. The primitive vessel has a rustic simplicity, potted with thick walls to a tapered cylindrical shape with angular shoulders and a narrowed neck.
The jar exterior is decorated in white clay slip with a sgraffito design of birds, flowers and poetry, the shoulders stamped with geometric meanders and brushed with horse-eye whorls. The sgraffito decoration is finished by a translucent brown glaze for contrasting shades of light and dark.
