A vintage Chinese table screen (pingfeng) of rectangular form with cloud-scrolled ruyi corners, raised on a matching carved hardwood stand.
The panel is densely inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl, depicting two confronting five-claw dragons flanking a flaming pearl — the classic "double dragons playing with a pearl" motif — their scales, manes, and claws picked out in luminous shell against the dark polished hardwood ground.
The stand is carved with scrolling waves and ruyi-cloud motifs, and the whole piece has developed a warm, mellow patina. A handsome scholarly object for a desk, console, or bookshelf, and a strong focal piece in a chinoiserie room.
