Striking sculptural studio pottery vessel by Missouri ceramic artist Robert Wiedmaier of Platte City, Missouri.
The substantial rounded form is finished in a glossy black glaze with fine speckling and decorated with sweeping turquoise-green lines, vivid blue dot clusters and rosy pink circular motifs. Fine warm-toned concentric rings surround the central opening, giving the abstract design an almost celestial or orbital quality.
Its unusual low, rounded silhouette makes this piece as much a sculptural object as a decorative vessel. Beautiful displayed on a console, dining table, coffee table, credenza or pedestal, it has wonderful visual presence while remaining a practical size for residential interiors.
The underside is unglazed and bears the artist’s impressed maker’s mark.
Believed to date to the 1990s. The piece was owned by the family of Virginia Kellogg, founder and longtime organizer of Kansas City’s Brookside Art Annual, where ceramic artist Robert Wiedmaier later became a recurring exhibitor. The Brookside Art Annual continues to honor Virginia Kellogg with its Best of Show award.
A distinctive example of American studio pottery with an unusual sculptural form, lively abstract decoration and beautiful glossy finish.
