The exuberant Renaissance Revival decoration centers on a mirrored pair of fantastical winged creatures surrounded by flowers, curling foliage, and delicate calligraphic scrollwork.
Its most remarkable feature is the elaborate sculptural rim, constructed with undulating yellow panels held by applied ceramic loops to create the appearance of an ornamental woven basket. The exterior is fully decorated with coordinating floral sprays, making the bowl beautiful from every angle.
The fanciful decoration belongs to the Italian grottesche tradition, a Renaissance ornamental vocabulary combining mythical creatures, foliage, flowers, and imaginative scrollwork. Founded in 1959, the Sberna workshop continues Deruta’s centuries-old tradition of handmade, hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware.
A joyful and unusually substantial statement piece for a dining table, console, or large kitchen island.
