Marked GDR on the reverse, this charming figure was made in the former German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, before German reunification in 1990. It is crafted in richly grained turned wood and features a large crown, vivid hand-painted blue eyes, rosy cheeks, curled gray mustache, expressive open mouth with painted teeth, red uniform details, black boots, and a wonderfully full gray faux-fur beard and hair.
The cheerful king or royal-guard design has the warmth and character collectors love in traditional German Christmas décor. Its hand-painted details, sculptural turned-wood form, and aged faux-fur trim give it a distinctive vintage folk-art presence. The figure stands independently on its original rectangular wooden base.
