Measures 11" wide, 8" deep and 34" tall.

The N'tomo (or Ndomo) is the very first initiation society that young, uncircumcised Bamana boys enter. It protects them from malevolent spiritual forces, teaches them self-control, and prepares them for adult societal responsibilities. The vertical horns at the crest are a hallmark of N'tomo masks. They represent the growth of human knowledge and primordial spikes of creation. The striking, geometric superstructure aligned directly over the forehead acts as an abstract visual anchor, emphasizing deep spiritual alignment, intellect, and internal discipline. The long, straight nose bridge, stylized downcast eyes, and small pursed mouth signify the absolute importance of silence, discretion, and controlling one's speech—vital lessons taught to young initiates. The woven, colorful fibers hanging from the ears are traditional adornments often added by communities to personalize or dress the mask during masquerades and festive village cycles.

These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s. See less
