Measures 4 1/2" wide, 5 1/2" deep and 28" tall.

This is a traditional hand-carved wooden Dogon maternity sculpture originating from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. Crafted by Dogon artisans, these figures often represent ancestral spirits, fertility, or maternity (dege dal nda) and were historically placed in village shrines or family altars. The sculpture features classic Dogon aesthetic elements, including an elongated torso, prominent linear facial scarification, a stylized pointed headdress, and a seated posture on a traditional cylindrical stool. Carved from a single piece of dense tropical hardwood, it displays a dry, weathered surface texture and natural grain patterns indicative of traditional West African tribal carving.

These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s. See less
