Antique West African Voodou Folk Art Hand-Carved Wooden Papa Legba Sculpture
Measures 3" wide, 3 1/8" deep and 28 1/2" tall.
The figure features a tall, tapered, spear-like conical head or hairstyle common in West African stylized folk carvings. The large, diamond-shaped geometric eyes feature lighter inset material (typically mother-of-pearl or bone) contrasted against the stained wood grain. The torso and legs are carved using sharp, minimalist geometric angles resting on a rectangular block pedestal base.
These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s.
