Measures 7 1/4" wide, 6 1/4" deep and 30" tall.

This is a hand-carved West African tribal mask, predominantly sharing design features with the art of the Baule (Baoulé) or Guro peoples from the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire). The mask showcases a narrow, stylized face painted in a deep red ochre patina, with small downcast or almond-shaped eyes, typical of portrait masks symbolizing peace, respect, and intellect. The upper section incorporates a full standing human figure engaged in a task or symbolic posture, a hallmark of more intricate West African masquerade and decorative craftsmanship.The perimeter retains small tufts of natural fiber or jute rope, mimicking the traditional attachments used to tie the mask to a dancer's woven costume or headpiece. The elongated chin drops into a long rectangular extension decorated with colorful, painted geometric patterns.

These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 80s. See less
