Antique Bakota Reliquary Kota Mask Figure Sculpture from the Tribe in Gabon
Measures 11 3/4" wide, 6" deep and 23 1/2" tall.
This artifact is a traditional Kota reliquary guardian figure (mbulu ngulu), originating from the rainforest region of Gabon in central Africa. Crafted from a carved wooden core overlaid with beaten copper and brass sheeting, accented with punched geometric and dotted engravings. Features a stylized concave face, a large crescent-shaped headdress, and an open diamond-shaped lower body that was traditionally lashed to a relic basket. Placed atop portable basket-shrines containing the skeletal relics of important clan ancestors to protect the family line and honor the deceased.
These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 80s.
