This one is missing the right hand and was carved this way. I am not sure of the meaning.

Measures 9" wide, 9 1/2" deep and 32" tall.

Unlike many neighboring West African traditions, iagalagana figures do not directly represent ancestors. Instead, they serve as multi-functional vessels that incarnate powerful tutelary (guardian) spirits. An individual statue frequently serves several overlapping roles. They are kept in family compounds or separate ritual huts (tsafi) to safeguard families, avert diseases like smallpox, and protect against malevolent forces. Healers and religious diviners use the sculptures to diagnose misfortunes, predict the future, and find remedies for illnesses or fertility issues. Specialized rainmakers invoke the spirits within these statues during severe droughts to bring rainfall for crucial agricultural crops like sorghum and millet. In local disputes, elders or village chiefs use the statues to mediate trials; individuals in conflict swear oaths or kiss the statue to prove their honesty. Beyond spiritual duties, ownership of a well-carved iagalagana reinforces the social standing, wisdom, and leadership authority of family elders and chiefs.

These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 80s. See less
