A pair of French Neoclassical portrait busts by François Sellier, probably dating to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, executed in patinated bronze and mounted on pale marble columns with gilt-metal fittings. Each bears the signature SELLIER, flanked by star-shaped ornaments, on the reverse. Sellier became a maître in 1782 and worked from Rue Mauconseil, Paris, in 1783 and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis in 1789, placing his documented activity within the late Louis XVI period.

The portraits offer distinct characterizations of the two philosophers. Voltaire’s slender face, pronounced cheekbones, and subtly smiling mouth convey an alert, animated expression, while Rousseau’s fuller features and composed gaze establish a quieter presence. Carefully articulated hair and deeply modeled classical drapery give both sculptures definition and texture, with the dark bronze contrasting against the pale stone and golden mounts.

Each bust rests on a turned socle above a cylindrical marble pedestal, with beaded borders, twisted-rope moldings, and stepped circular bases enriched by finely textured bands. Shaped gilt-metal plaques identify the sitters and commemorate their deaths in 1778; these inscriptions refer to the philosophers rather than the date of manufacture. The matching architectural supports unite the portraits as a companion pair, giving these intimate sculptures the formal dignity of miniature commemorative monuments.
