This carved pier mirror got that treatment from start to finish, right here at the Turtle & Crane Atelier, in a style that echoes the pale, weathered interiors Axel Vervoordt is known for and the Swedish antiques Lars Bolander has spent a career championing.

It didn't start out quiet. The frame came to us in a heavy, dark lacquered finish with only the carving's recesses picked out in dull gold — handsome bones, but flattened under all that dark stain, with the acanthus scrolls and floral crest reading more like a pattern than sculpture. I stripped that weight away and rebuilt the finish in layers: a limewash in soft sage and warm bone tones worked down into every fold of the scrollwork and rosette centers, then rubbed back on the high points so the carving finally reads with real depth. Gold leaf was worked selectively into the recesses of the florets and scrolls, letting the gilding catch light without overwhelming the palette. Fly speckling was added last — the old Swedish trick for suggesting decades of accumulated age on a painted surface, applied by hand in fine, irregular dots across the frame.

The result is a mirror transformed from dark and heavy into something with real presence despite its modest scale — the kind of piece that doesn't need to be large to anchor a console, a hallway, or a powder room. Gustavian style has always been about restraint doing the work that ornament usually does, and that's exactly the effect here: soft, weathered, quietly luxe.
