Exceptional antique American Victorian two-tier wicker parlor table with an elaborate woven “birdcage” base, beautifully aged natural dark-brown finish, and distinctive decorative wicker workmanship.
This unusual round occasional table features a wooden top and lower shelf framed by intricate hand-woven wicker/rattan construction. The apron incorporates elaborate braided and rope-like detailing, while four dramatically splayed, curved legs form an open birdcage-style base. Decorative woven supports create the characteristic open oval and hourglass-shaped motifs between the upper and lower tiers.
The combination of the round wood top, lower shelf, elaborate woven apron, splayed birdcage legs, and ornamental wickerwork is strongly consistent with late-19th-century American Victorian wicker furniture associated with Heywood Brothers & Wakefield / Heywood-Wakefield.
The table is not marked or labeled, so it is offered as attributed to Heywood-Wakefield rather than represented as definitively signed by the maker. Its construction and design are particularly noteworthy when compared with documented Heywood-Wakefield Victorian wicker tables of the period.
The table retains its natural dark-brown aged finish and antique patina, which has been preserved rather than refinished. The surface and wickerwork display the expected signs of age and use, contributing to the character of this nearly architectural piece.
A particularly appealing example for a collector of Victorian wicker, an antique dealer, or an interior designer looking for an unusual statement accent.
