Its deep basin, substantial walls, and long channel-like trough channel demonstrate the skill required to hollow and shape such a large piece entirely by hand. The richly aged surface retains beautiful variations in color, visible tool marks, wear, and patina developed through generations of use. Originally an utilitarian vessel, troughs of this type were used in rural China for handling and controlling liquids such as water or oil.
