A striking pair of vintage brass finials featuring mirrored winged gryphons (griffins) within circular frames. Each finial depicts the legendary creature in profile, with the pair facing opposite directions when displayed together.
The finely detailed openwork design includes engraved feather and body details, while the lower fittings feature attractive knurled bands that add an architectural, almost mechanical quality to the pieces.
Gryphons—mythological creatures traditionally depicted with characteristics of both the eagle and lion—have been used for centuries in European decorative arts and architecture as symbols of strength, guardianship, and protection.
Each finial measures approximately 3” high, with the circular decorative portion measuring approximately 2” across. The hollow openings at the base suggest these were designed to mount onto narrow posts or rods. Their exact original application is unknown; possibilities include decorative furniture, lighting, fireplace, curtain/drapery, or other architectural hardware.
Wonderful displayed as found objects, incorporated into a restoration project, or repurposed as distinctive decorative accents. The opposing gryphons make the pair particularly appealing for symmetrical display.
