Painted in oil on canvas, Sunlight Through the Trees combines strong natural observation with expressive brushwork and a beautifully restrained palette of moss green, ochre, muted gold, gray and russet.
Tall tree trunks establish the vertical rhythm of the composition, while a narrow path leads the eye deeper into the woods. Maillien contrasts the dark mass of evergreens with lighter deciduous trunks and passages of illuminated grasses, allowing the changing light to become the true subject of the painting. The textured handling of the paint gives movement to the foliage and undergrowth without sacrificing the quiet character of the landscape.
Arthur Henri Joseph Maximilien Maillien was born in Miécret, Belgium, in 1888 and died in Natoye in 1962. A Belgian painter and miniaturist associated with the region around Ciney and Miécret, Maillien was particularly known for landscape subjects. His work reflects the enduring Belgian tradition of intimate landscape painting, with particular attention to wooded countryside, changing seasons and the effects of natural light. By the 1930s he was an established working artist, and surviving examples from this period confirm his continued interest in the rural landscapes of Wallonia.
The painting is signed A. Maillien and dated 1937 lower right. An earlier label records the title “Sunlight Through the Trees.” Presented in a restrained gilt frame, the painting remains a particularly appealing example of Maillien’s landscape work from the interwar period.
