An evocative late 16th or early 17th century European religious painting depicting Christ before the High Priest Caiaphas, an episode from the Passion of Christ. The composition presents the figures in elaborate Renaissance period dress and has the intimate scale and densely arranged narrative associated with Northern European devotional painting of the period.
Painted in oil on a wood panel, the work is believed to be Flemish or from the broader Northern European tradition.
The painting measures approximately 11.5 inches wide by 15 inches high and is presented in a later quality black and silver gilt frame. The frame is not original to the painting. The panel has an age related crack, along with surface wear and craquelure expected in a work of this considerable age.
