Snow settles across the rooftops, lanes and surrounding countryside while the village church rises prominently above the clustered houses, establishing the architectural center of the composition. Maurice Fourneau (1900–1990) was a Belgian painter, draftsman and printmaker associated with the region of Mons and Havré. He studied at the Académie des Beaux Arts de Mons and developed a career centered largely upon landscape painting, still lifes and scenes drawn from the historic towns and countryside of Belgium. The villages, churches, wooded roads and architecture of the region provided recurring subjects throughout his work. Rather than presenting these places with strict topographical precision, Fourneau interpreted them through atmosphere, season and light, giving his paintings a distinctly personal sense of place.
“Winter Village” reflects this enduring interest in the Belgian countryside. The prominence of the church, the closely gathered houses and the surrounding fields recall the centuries old structure of European village life, while Fourneau’s subdued color and expressive handling give the scene warmth and immediacy.
