An exceptional 18th century French Louis XVI period secretary crafted from solid oak and now presented in a beautifully stripped finish that reveals the natural grain and hand carving. The restrained architectural form is distinctly Neoclassical, with tapered legs, carved rosettes, fluted details and finely worked geometric borders framing the façade.
The slant front is especially distinguished by a delicately carved basket of flowers joined by scrolling vines and blossoms, an appropriately refined motif for the Louis XVI period. Related floral carving continues across the two substantial lower drawers, creating a remarkably unified composition. The carving remains crisp yet understated, allowing the pale oak and craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker to remain central to the design.
Opening the fall front reveals a fitted writing interior with multiple small drawers and compartments surrounding a generous writing surface. With a surface at approximately 29 inches high, the open desk provides a comfortable working height while preserving the secretary’s compact proportions. The two large drawers below provide excellent storage, making this an unusually practical surviving example of late 18th century French furniture.
The Louis XVI period marked France’s return to the symmetry and classical vocabulary inspired by antiquity. Straight lines, architectural detailing, floral garlands and tapered legs replaced the pronounced curves of the preceding Rococo era. Here those Neoclassical principles are interpreted in oak with considerable delicacy, giving the secretary both refinement and the warmth associated with provincial French cabinetmaking.
