“Desolation,” an evocative limited-edition drypoint intaglio etching by American artist Woody Gruber (1946–2022).
A solitary Victorian-era house stands against an expansive, nearly empty landscape, its architectural details crisply rendered amid tangled grasses, distant fields, utility wires, and a lone bird perched along the line. Gruber’s restrained palette, fine linear work, and atmospheric plate tone give the composition a haunting stillness with strong American Gothic and realist appeal.
The impression is numbered 51/75 in pencil at lower left, titled “Desolation” at lower center, and signed “Woody Gruber” in pencil at lower right. The impressed plate mark remains visible around the image.
Professionally presented beneath glass with a wide ivory mat and narrow antiqued gold-and-black frame. Its intimate scale and quiet architectural subject make it particularly well suited to a library, study, collected gallery wall, or traditionally layered interior.
Acquired from a private collection with estate documentation identifying the work as “Woody Gruber ‘Desolation’ Pencil Signed Drypoint Intaglio Etching Limited Edition 51/75, Matted and Framed.”
This is one of two signed, limited-edition Woody Gruber intaglio etchings acquired from the same private collection. A companion work by the artist is being offered separately, allowing the two to be displayed individually or together as a coordinated pair.

The print presents cleanly beneath glass with strong linework and tonal detail. Subtle plate tone, fine linear textures, and minor variations within the printed field are inherent to the hand-pulled intaglio process. No obvious tears, staining, or significant foxing are visible. The antiqued gold-and-black frame retains its intentionally mottled finish, with scattered light scratches, edge rubbing, and small localized finish losses consistent with age. Frame corners appear secure. Artwork has not been examined outside the frame. Please review all photographs closely. less
