The seated Buddha is depicted in a meditative pose upon an elaborate architectural lotus-form pedestal, backed by a dramatic pointed mandorla carved with scrolling cloud motifs. The layered pedestal, gilt surface and areas of exposed dark lacquer give the piece exceptional depth and an authentically aged appearance.

The sculpture rests on a separate dark wood display base and has substantial decorative presence at approximately 12 inches tall. The underside retains an older handwritten provenance note identifying the piece as Japanese, carved wood, black lacquer and gold leaf, and dating it to the mid-1900s.

The naturally distressed gilding, surface wear and visible lacquer are particularly attractive and consistent with age, giving the Buddha the character collectors and designers seek in older Asian decorative objects.

A beautiful statement piece for an Asian-inspired interior, meditation space, library, console, collected traditional room, or layered contemporary setting.
