A striking assembled pair of large late-19th-century Chinese porcelain vases, each decorated in underglaze cobalt blue against a soft celadon ground.
The two vases feature complementary but individually rendered bird, floral and botanical decoration. One is prominently decorated with phoenix-like birds amid flowering peonies and foliage, while the companion vase displays birds among large blossoms and branches. Applied pierced handles flank the necks, and both vessels have tall baluster forms terminating in broad flared mouths.
The subtle differences in height, form and hand-painted decoration give the pair the character of collected antique objects while allowing them to display beautifully together.
Dating to approximately the late 19th century, circa 1880. One vase retains an older inventory/dealer label to the underside reading “1880AD,” along with a red wax/seal-like remnant. The label represents a prior attribution and is not presented as independent authentication.
Dimensions:
Shorter vase: 22.5"H × approximately 9" diameter at widest point.
Taller vase: 23.25"H × approximately 8" diameter at widest point.
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear and irregularities. Both retain visible glaze and firing imperfections, scattered surface speckling and marks, and wear/soiling to the foot rims. The taller vase shows areas of surface discoloration and wear, particularly on the reverse. Please review all photographs closely for condition.
Sold together as a pair.
