c. 1900s-1910s; mfd. by Sentenne & Green for John W. Masury & Son - New York, NY
Color lithographed tin advertising sign promoting Masury's Pure Colors, depicting the manufacture of oil-based paints from pigment grinding through mechanical canning. The composition features a young spokesman presenting Masury's products beneath the slogan "The Acknowledged Standard," while a factory worker grinds pigments by hand at left and automated production equipment packages finished paint at right. Numerous labeled pigment sacks, stacks of paint cans, and a detailed rendering of the company's machinery illustrate the transition from traditional craftsmanship to industrial production. Printed with "New York - Chicago" along the lower edge and manufactured by Sentenne & Green, the sign is an excellent example of early twentieth-century trade advertising for one of America's leading paint manufacturers.
Founded in Brooklyn in 1835, John W. Masury & Son became one of the nation's foremost paint manufacturers, pioneering ready-mixed paints and heavily promoting the quality and consistency of its linseed oil-based pigments through richly illustrated advertising. Sentenne & Green of New York was among the premier lithographic firms producing colorful tin advertising signs for American manufacturers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Three corners are bent into sharp angles, and a small puncture hole is present slightly left of center. The lower edge exhibits gentle rolling bends and light creasing, while the thin tin retains some flexibility. The reverse retains remnants of its original black finish with scattered losses, including one larger area consistent with moisture or liquid exposure. Despite these condition issues, the colors remain vibrant and the graphics retain outstanding visual appeal. less
