After the famed Medici lions of Florence, Italy, this reconstituted stone statue is a French interpretation, dating to the 1900s. Our lion is in the classic stance, with his right paw on a sphere. This indicates that the inspiration for our lion is the older Medici lion by Fancelli, which was carved in marble in the 2nd century. Fancelli’s lion has the sphere under the right paw, while Vacca’s lion from the 16th century is a mirror image, with the sphere under the lion’s left paw.
