A compelling collection of four 19th-century American educational and literary volumes dating from 1831 to 1876. Together, the books offer nearly half a century of American educational history and create an authentic antique library grouping with beautifully aged bindings and timeworn character.
The collection includes The Rhetorical Reader (1831), Weld & Quackenbos’ New English Grammar (1859), Franklin Sixth Reader and Speaker (1876), and Longer English Poems (1876).
Of particular interest, The Rhetorical Reader dates to 1831, while New English Grammar was published in 1859, before the American Civil War. The two 1876 volumes complete the collection, giving the group a publication span of approximately 45 years.
The varied brown, green and red bindings, aged paper and original typography make this an especially appealing grouping for an antique library, study, bookcase or collected interior. Display together vertically or stacked as an authentic group of 19th-century books.
Dimensions: Each book measures approximately 7–7.5 in. H x 4.5–5 in. W. All four together measure approximately 4 in. across the spines when displayed side by side.
Condition:
Antique condition with substantial age-related wear consistent with books approximately 150–195 years old. Bindings show rubbing, discoloration, edge and corner wear, and other signs of age and use. Pages show toning, foxing and spotting. The 1831 Rhetorical Reader is particularly distressed, with extensive writing/markings, and significant binding wear. Please review photographs closely. Offered for their historical and decorative character in as-found antique condition.
