Cut and polished from fossilized trees (typically from the extinct Triassic conifer Araucarioxylon arizonicum) found in Arizona. Beautifully matched pair of Arizona rainbow petrified wood bookends featuring striking natural mineral coloration and rugged natural bark edges cut from a single section of fossilized wood.

The inner faces are cut flat and polished to a high sheen to highlight the natural wood rings, organic banding, and deep brown, tan, and cream tones. The outer crust retains its raw, rugged tree-bark texture. Rich shades of rust red, cream, yellow, moss green and various shades of brown create an especially attractive “rainbow” appearance. Depending on the minerals present in groundwater during the fossilization process, petrified wood can be a variety of different colors from deep blacks to reds, yellows, pinks, blues, whites, and even greens.

Dating back over 200 million years to the Late Triassic epoch, Arizona petrified wood is renowned for its vibrant rainbow colors caused by iron and manganese oxides. This fossilized material from the Chinle Formation features beautiful wood grains replaced by quartz and chalcedony. Each bookend has felt applied to two adjoining surfaces, allowing the pair to be positioned in more than one orientation. One bookend retains an older paper label reading “ARIZONA PETRIFIED WOOD”.
Sold as a pair. These are large, quality Arizona petrified wood. One bookend is polished on both sides. The other bookend is polished on one side only and the other been left unpolished to showcase the natural wood. Lined with soft black felt on the insides and underneath to avoid scratching shelves.
