A tall, narrow cylinder crafted in high-fired white porcelain, the form rises to a slightly rolled lip above straight, seamless walls and a flat foot. The exterior is finished in a glossy white glaze that provides a luminous ground for a 24karat gold overlay applied as broad, sweeping bands and fine linear accents. The gold is composed into a continuous decorative program of swirling wave forms that evolve into radiating fan motifs, wrapping the body in a vertical, rhythmic pattern that reads equally graphic and sculptural. The hand-applied gold defines the surface without altering the vase’s strict cylindrical geometry, and the gilding is executed with clean edges and precise separations between motifs. The interior remains glazed white, placing emphasis on the exterior ornament. The restrained silhouette and striking metallic surface reflect late 20th-century German porcelain design and studio practice, which Rosenthal is known for.
