Mid-Century Modern Organic Biomorphic Figurative Burl Wood Carving Sculpture
Measures 12" wide, 12" deep and 23" tall.
The piece embraces biomorphism, an art movement that focuses on naturally occurring, fluid shapes reminiscent of living organisms, rock formations, and skeletal structures. This aesthetic was famously pioneered and popularized mid-century by iconic sculptors like Henry Moore and Isamu Noguchi. Sculptures like this are often carved out of dense, highly figured materials like burl wood or root wood (such as Thuya or teak) to incorporate natural knots, negative spaces, and smooth curves into the design.
These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 80s.
