Its scalloped form is centred by … Read more A late 19th-century paris porcelain portrait plate, created in the sèvres style circa 1870–1890. Its scalloped form is centred by a hand-painted miniature of madame élisabeth of france, youngest sister of louis xvi, set against a restrained grey background and framed by a broad cobalt bleu de roi border.

the portrait is signed poitevin at the lower right. Poitevin was the talented artist who led the paris porcelain decorating atelier responsible for the painting.

raised burnished gilding decorates the border with rococo revival foliage, floral swags, roses, beading and scalloped foliate outlines. The gilt work retains strong definition against the deep cobalt ground, while fine gold lines establish a clear division between the portrait and the border.

the reverse is inscribed in purple "mme elisabeth" and retains a blue underglaze pseudo-sèvres interlaced "l" mark with the arbitrary date letter "g". An impressed potter's registry numeral is also present in the hard-paste porcelain body.

dimensions: diameter 24.3 cm; height 2.5 cm; weight 392 g.

condition: excellent condition. Examined under uv light, the painted front has no visible scratches and appears to have seen little or no use. The hand-painted portrait is beautifully preserved. The gilt decoration is in excellent condition, with only minimal, barely perceptible traces of use to the gilding on the rim. See less
