Signed in the plate. A finely executed satirical lithograph from the celebrated French series Macédoine, published in Paris by Aubert & Cie and printed/distributed by Chez Bauger. It is a classic example of French July Monarchy-era social satire. The comedic punchline relies on a clever French double entendre printed at the very bottom: "Batterie de Cuisine" (Translation: "Kitchenware" / "Kitchen Assault") The joke relies on a brilliant play on words. In French, a "batterie de cuisine" is the standard culinary term for a full set of pots, pans, and cooking utensils (as seen hanging on the back wall). However, the word "batterie"also literally means an assault, a beating, or a physical brawl. Plattel turns the mundane phrase into a literal battlefield, showing the two characters using the actual "batterie de cuisine" to commit a literal "batterie" against one another in a chaotic workplace dispute.
