Plate from "The Face of Hamburg", monogrammed in the plate. The bottom portion depicts a cross-section of the famous St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel. Pedestrians walk through the left arched entrance, while streamlined cars navigate the right tunnel, accented by dramatic, radiating perspective lines mimicking artificial underground light. The work is a quintessential celebration of The Machine Age and urban modernity. By juxtaposing pedestrians, underground automobile traffic, heavy port machinery, maritime transit, and aviation in a single frame, Masereel effectively maps out the total interconnected infrastructure of a booming modern port city.
