Three rows of large octagonal medallions, each held inside a stepped, hooked bracket that gives the design its "dragon" name, run in offset rows across a soft blue field. The brackets alternate ivory, terracotta and brick red, with small flowering trees set in their stems, and the open ground between them is filled with the little horses, birds, goats and standing figures that make this design so lively up close. A narrow guard of hooked motifs frames the whole.

Hand-knotted from hand-spun wool with a low, even pile on a cotton foundation, and woven in Afghanistan. All colors are natural vegetable and mineral dyes, which give the muted tones and the gentle color shifts (abrash) you see across the blue ground.
