Striking large hand-crafted Nepalese mask depicting Bhairava, the fierce protective manifestation of Shiva. This highly dimensional mask features three prominent eyes, including the characteristic central “third eye,” large staring eyes, exposed fangs, elongated ears, dramatic facial features, and elaborate raised ornamentation. Rich burgundy-red, gold, cream, orange and black painted decoration gives the piece tremendous visual presence.

The elongated earlobes are pierced for separate earrings or ornaments. No earrings or additional ear ornaments are currently present.

The mask appears to be formed from a substantial molded clay and fiber/paper composite rather than conventional lightweight papier-mâché. An area of loss along the rear edge exposes the coarse, porous interior material. Exact material composition is unknown.

Its unusually deep construction creates a dramatic sculptural appearance, projecting approximately 8.5" from front to back. Numerous smaller holes are present around portions of the perimeter and appear associated with the mask's original construction and/or attachment methods. A red cord is currently attached for hanging and may be a later addition.

Condition: Good vintage preowned condition with age-related surface wear, paint wear, abrasions, small losses and handmade irregularities throughout. There is deterioration/chipping and material loss along a portion of the rear rim, exposing the underlying composite construction. The pierced earlobes are intentional; however, any original earrings or ornaments are no longer present. Please review photographs carefully as they are considered part of the condition description.

Exact maker and date are unknown. Based on the iconography and construction, the piece appears consistent with the Nepalese/Newar artistic tradition, likely from the Kathmandu Valley. It is being offered as a vintage decorative/cultural object; no claim is made regarding ceremonial use or a specific period of manufacture.
