English George III mahogany corner commode chair, or close stool, dating to circa 1790. The chair is distinguished by its unusual enclosed commode-seat construction, elegantly shaped lower apron, and finely pierced Gothic-inspired splats framed by turned supports.
Crafted in richly figured mahogany with a warm, deep brown patina, the chair features a broad, serpentine crest rail, out swept arms, turned uprights with ring-turned details, and square legs. The two pierced splats display an intricate, symmetrical pattern of interlacing curves and geometric openings, characteristic of the refined decorative vocabulary of the late Georgian period.
The substantial enclosed seat compartment is consistent with the chair's original function as a commode chair/close stool, historically designed to accommodate a chamber pot. The removable upholstered seat is covered in a later pale gold damask fabric with an elegant scrolling pattern.
A particularly unusual and sculptural example of Georgian seating, combining practical domestic function with sophisticated mahogany craftsmanship. The chair retains an appealing aged surface and evidence of its long history, including old joinery, surface wear, and restorations consistent with age.
Circa 1790.

The mahogany retains a rich, warm patina with surface wear, minor scratches, abrasions, small losses, and scattered marks throughout. One leg exhibits a noticeable bow/warp consistent with age-related movement in the timber. The frame also shows evidence of old repairs and restorations, particularly around the legs, seat rails, and joinery, along with areas of age-related separation and shrinkage. The present pale gold damask upholstery is later and shows minor wear and light soiling. The original commode mechanism and chamber-pot fittings are not present. Structurally stable overall, with the bowed leg and other age-related imperfections contributing to the chair's antique character. less
